A well-known element of District living are the cozy spaces. Lots of recent-ish college grads, newly weds, and other people who are opposed to paying three quarters of their pre-tax salary on renting a two bedroom space opt for the oh-so-common studio or one bedroom apartment. They're tucked away in basements or are created in old homes that have been split into rental units. They're unique, full of character, and require creativity to utilize every inch of their 520 square feet.
One tried and true way to keep a small space from closing in on you is to utilize white. We have white walls, white dishes, white linens, white curtains, white lamps, etc. Fun fact: capitalizing on the color white gives you ample freedom to play with textures and patterns. Plus, I love the way sunlight coming through the windows seems to almost bounce from white surface to white surface.
So when I stumbled on this Pinterested board, I feel in love. One day, when we move from our newlywed nest, I'll be keeping these in mind for our new home.

Brad and I lived in an apartment near Lincoln Park with all white walls for our first 6 1/2 years of marriage. When we bought our house last spring, I was so tired of white (that I wasn't allowed to paint because we were renting) that I went a little crazy with color. Now, every single room in our new house is a different color--I've sworn off white walls for now, but I'm sure I'll go back to them some day.:) White does seem to make small spaces seem larger--a must for Capitol Hill living!
